Unmade #45
This series both documents and re-interprets the aesthetic of urbanness. It is about exploring the visual
language of the city: a language that is replete with nuance and humour and always in a constant state of
flux.
Most things in all cities are in various states of decay. Even the most sturdy-seeming infrastructure will
crumble without on going maintenance and meticulous care. Many objects look beautiful, as they are
gradually unmade.
This series was borne out of a fascination with painting. While walking I started noticing vignettes –
usually something like a decaying piece of wood, leaning against a wall – that bore remarkable likeness to
some of the most famous European/American paintings. Rothko, Twombly and Rauschenberg . I started
to wonder what an urban aesthetic from the global South could say back to this canon.
In altering these objects whether it is through painting, arrangement or manipulating. I then freeze the
object in its current state with a photograph. The found objects themselves are sometimes collected and by
exhibiting these alongside the photographs it creates a conversation between the ‘real’ object and the
‘photographed’ object in its natural environment on the street.
